Back to School: Caring for Your Child’s Vision

Tips for Good Vision and Eye Health in Children

It’s back-to-school season and we know parents have a lot on their mind, such as getting everything on your child’s school list, getting back into a schedule, and worrying about what to pack for your kid’s lunch. But another important item to add to your back-to-school to-do list is an eye exam for your child.

Having good vision can help set your child up for more success this school year. No matter where they sit in the classroom, you’ll know that after a vision checkup, they’ll be able to see the whiteboard or chalkboard clearly. Plus regular eye exams promote eye health!

Here are some tips to help keep your child’s eyes healthy this school year.

1 | Get a Back-to-School Exam ASAP

The earlier in the school year your child has an eye exam the better. If your child’s vision has changed, it could be difficult for them to see the chalkboard or read their book. Having good vision will give your child the confidence to succeed in school, so if they need glasses or contacts, or have a change in their prescription, make sure you get new glasses or contacts as soon as possible to set your child up for success.

2 | Glasses and Contact Care

Now is a good time to refresh your child’s knowledge on care and hygiene of their glasses and/or contacts. If you don’t feel comfortable doing the refresher, ask your child’s eye doctor at their next eye exam to go over the steps to help them have clean and healthy vision.

If you are up for the task, here are some tips:

  • Keep glasses clean and streak free by using special wipes or a spray and cloth meant for glasses. Smudges can impair their vision and lead to straining.
  • Store glasses in a hard case when not in use to protect them from breaks.
  • Use special sports glasses if needed during PE and after school activities.
  • Wash hands before handling contact lenses.
  • Take contact lenses out every night and clean only in contact lens solution.
  • Take contact lenses out before swimming.

3 | Healthy Living for Better Vision

Having a healthy lifestyle can support and protect your eye health. Here are some tips that will help your child care for their eyes:

  • Eat a well-balanced diet and load up on different types of fruits, veggies, and fish like tuna or salmon. So pack those carrot sticks, apples, and a tuna fish sandwich for your kid’s lunch!
  • Being overweight or obese puts a person at a higher risk for diabetes and other conditions that can lead to eye problems. Make sure your child is getting in some exercise, especially if they aren’t on the playground or in PE class daily, such as some high schoolers.
  • Remind your child to speak up if they feel like they aren’t seeing as clearly or if they are noticing headaches or straining from unclear vision.
  • Get your child a good pair of sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB radiation. Remind them to wear sunglasses when outside and to never look directly at the sun.
