Sunglasses in Winter

Do I Need to Wear Sunglasses in Winter?

Ski season is here and so are more reasons to protect your eyes! During the winter, it is crucial to have the proper eye protection. Snow and water act as mirrors for the sun’s rays. As light reflects off of these surfaces, the intensity of harmful UV rays is almost doubled.

This increases the risks of many serious medical conditions such as:

  • Corneal burns
  • Cataracts
  • Macular degeneration
  • Eye cancer

All which lead to impaired vision and potential for blindness.

Here in Colorado, we are at an even greater risk for these complications due to the higher altitude and 300 days of annual sunshine. For every 1,000 ft of elevation gain, there is about a 4% increase in UV exposure causing Colorado to have a UV index that is 2.7 times higher than the national average.

Use caution when spending time outdoors, and NEVER ski without goggles. Doing so may cause severe harm to your eyes.

Black Diamond Eye Care offers expert protection options while you are on the slopes and enjoying Colorado this season. If you feel as if you have harmed your eyes due to improper protection, call to schedule a visit with one of our doctors today.
