My Vision is Blurry, Do I Really Need Glasses?

Signs You Should See Your Eye Doctor Plus Why Vision Correction is Important

When it comes to your vision, it’s important to be aware of any changes or discomfort you may experience. This is because changes in your vision or discomfort can be signs of a developing condition. The earlier you catch these conditions, the more treatable they are.

In this article, we’ll look at some of the signs that it’s time to make an appointment with your eye doctor and why treating conditions or correcting vision is important.

Signs You Should See Your Eye Doctor

Some of the first signs of vision problems is blurry or double vision that may cause you to squint to attempt to see things more clearly. However, those aren’t the only signs you might need glasses. If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, you should make an appointment with your optometrist to diagnose the issue and treat the problems accordingly.

Blurry Vision: If objects at a distance appear fuzzy, blurry, or unclear, you may be developing myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, or another eye condition. These conditions cause light entering the eye to refract improperly, leading to your blurry vision.

Double Vision: Double vision could be an indicator that your eyes aren’t as healthy as they should be. When your eyes don’t work properly, that can cause overlapping, or double vision. Most often, this can be caused by astigmatism or cataracts developing.

Difficulty Reading: If it is becoming harder to read books or other print, you may need prescription glasses. One common cause for difficulty reading is presbyopia, where the lens of your eye slowly loses its ability to focus on nearby objects. This condition is commonly associated with aging.

Eye Strain: Eye strain is more and more common in our digital world. Many of us stare at device screens the majority of the day. However, this isn’t the only cause for eye strain. It can also be linked to things such as driving long distances, reading too much, dry air, too much time indoors, or even stress. Environmental factors aren’t always the cause; eye strain may be a sign of underlying visual problems or a refractive error.

Headaches: Frequent headaches can be directly caused by vision issues. If your eyes are straining or working too hard to see clearly or focus, this can lead to tension headaches. If you often experience headaches after using digital devices, reading, or engaging in other visually demanding tasks, it may be linked to a vision problem.

Dry Eye: Dry eye, which is a lack of production of natural tears that keep your eyes lubricated, can be caused by all sorts of things, including environmental, medical, and lifestyle factors. Dry eye can be very uncomfortable and should be addressed by your eye doctor.

Night Glare: If you experience night glare, or a halo around light sources in low light, then you may be developing a vision issue. Conditions such as cataracts, astigmatism, or cornea problems can cause light rays to scatter and appear blurry or circular.

Why Treatment and Vision Correction is Important

There are many reasons why treatment and vision correction is important. First and foremost, wearing glasses or contacts to correct your vision not only helps you see more clearly, but more comfortably as well. It helps reduce eye strain and headaches associated with vision problems. Wearing corrective lenses can also keep you from constantly squinting, which can lead to wrinkles. Plus, it can make activities, such as driving, safer. If you wear glasses with blue light filters, it can further reduce eye strain. TransitionPhotochromic lenses can also protect your eyes from harmful UV light while outdoors.

How much you need to wear your corrective lenses depends on your unique eye condition and prescription. Some people only need to wear glasses when reading, others may only need them when driving, and others may need them for seeing both near and far clearly.
